What's the difference between a homeschool class and coaching?
Our homeschool classes are small groups limited to ten students. Students think, question, create, and make connections through literature, history, discussion, writing, and project-based learning. Academic coaching is one-to-one and tailored to an individual student’s strengths, goals, and challenges. Coaching uses the student’s current academic work to build effective strategies and processes they can apply independently.
What actually happens in a coaching session?
During a coaching session, we use the student’s current classwork as a vehicle for developing stronger learning skills. Together, we identify the thinking, habits, or challenges that may be getting in the way, then build a practical process for approaching the work. The goal is not simply to find the answer, but to teach students how to find answers independently and apply that process to future challenges.
What does it cost?
Homeschool classes are $40 per hour and meet in two-hour sessions, once or twice a week depending on the class. One-on-one academic coaching and individual college essay coaching are $125 per hour. The eight-hour College Essay Program is $850. Parent Academy pricing is coming soon, and all 20-minute discovery calls are complimentary.
Do I have to commit to a package?
No. One-to-one coaching is scheduled one hour at a time, providing flexibility to continue based on your student’s goals and progress. The eight-hour college essay bundle is offered at a discount price because developing a strong, authentic essay requires a thoughtful process of reflection, drafting, feedback, and revision.
What ages do you work with?
I work with students in grades 6–12 through small-group homeschool classes, one-on-one academic coaching, and college essay coaching. Parent Academy is designed for parents seeking practical, research-based guidance and support.
What subjects do the homeschool classes cover?
The classes focus on English and History. English classes explore short stories, novels, essays, and poetry while integrating reading, writing, grammar, and mechanics. History classes examine World History including the Renaissance and American History from Reconstruction to the present day.
When do the homeschool classes run?
There are both Fall and Spring semester classes. Sessions are two hours, with curriculum and instruction aligned to Virginia’s state standards for education while allowing for deeper exploration, discussion, and project-based learning.
How are students assessed in a class?
Students are assessed through meaningful demonstrations of learning, including discussion, writing, projects, and portfolios. Clear rubrics and scoring guides provide consistent expectations, measure skill development and mastery, and give students specific feedback to guide continued growth.
Who writes the college essay?
The student always writes the essay. I guide them through a structured process of reflection, brainstorming, drafting, revision, and editing while helping them develop and strengthen their authentic voice. The result is an original essay that genuinely reflects who they are—and a writing process they can carry into college and beyond.
Is Parent Academy a parenting class?
No. Parent Academy is a collaborative, supportive space where parents learn information, share resources and experiences, and learn from one another. Parents gain practical tools, informed perspectives, and the reassurance of connecting with others navigating many of the same challenges.
Is this available online?
One-on-one coaching is available online through Zoom or Google Meet, making sessions accessible to students regardless of location. The homeschool classes are offered in person only, at Unity of Fairfax Church in Oakton.
What are your credentials?
I hold a Master’s Degree in Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature, with teaching credentials in Virginia, New York, Colorado, and Oregon. I am also a Licensed Brain Health Trainer through Amen University and bring nearly 30 years of experience teaching English, history, and Latin.
What happens on the discovery call?
The complimentary discovery call is designed to help us determine whether Mindset as Medicine is the right fit for you or your student. We'll discuss your goals, ask questions, and determine the best next steps before you make any commitment.
